Welcome...

This is the new British Nature website - I hope you like it!

The site is intended as a pictorial reference to the wildlife found in the United Kingdom.

All the photography is my own work unless otherwise stated.

Currently there are a total of 230 species recorded and over 300 images on the site!

What's it all about?

I created this website in 2006 but I have been interested in photography and nature for many years. With the recent availability of affordable digital cameras and technology I started to take more and more images. When trying to identify the content that I had recorded I found the process very frustrating! There is infinite information available but there are few sources that give a clear picture and explanation of the insect or animal that you have captured.

I decided to try and create a website that I would want to use for spiecies identification and British Nature online was born! The intention was/is to have pictures of as many different species of animal, insect, plant, tree etc that is found in the British Isles as I can find and take pictures of! I live by the beautiful Welsh Harp in North West London which is a fantastic area for bird watching and classed as a site of special scientific interest (SSSI). Many of my images were captured here.

My wife Gill is a Veterinary Nurse and we both share a huge love for nature and the environment. For many years Gill and I have cared for sick and injured wildlife casualties. We shared our home on countless occasions with rehabilitating birds, hedgehogs and other wildlife. What we really needed was a purpose built hospital.

So in 2000 we set up Hogheaven Wildlife Refuge and built a wildlife hospital in our back garden. We set it up as as a charity and tried to raise funds however we could. Sadly due to health, financial problems and family commitments we had to abandon this in 2004. We do still take in the odd animal now and then and usually have a few living with us that cannot be returned to the wild for one reason or another.

Several of the photos found on this site are of casualties that passed through the hospital. There is a link to the old Hogheaven website where you can learn more about what we did. Needless to say the experiences of running this enterprise has left its mark on Gill and I making our love and commitment to nature even stronger!

I take many photos and a selection can be seen here. I have several other collections of images elsewhere on the web and there are links to them on this site. I hope you find the site interesting and informative. Please sign the guestbook to let me know what you think of my site.
